Performance Sunglasses for Sailing

Each sailing discipline brings its own demands — and your eyewear should match them. The best model for you depends not just on personal preference, but on how and where you sail: the genre of sailing you practice, the strength of the wind, water state, and prevailing light and weather conditions.

From the glare of open water to the sting of salt spray, LiP watershades deliver clarity, comfort, and a secure fit when it matters most.

Any seadog worth his salt knows the ocean is nothing if not unpredictable — and that when it comes to safety, prevention over intervention is the sailor’s mantra.

If you’ve spent any time under sail, you know how quickly conditions can shift. One moment it’s clear skies and calm water — the next, the wind picks up, the seas start heaving, and your world tilts on its axis. In those moments, being prepared isn’t optional — it’s essential. The last thing you want is to be lashing down everything on deck and in the cabin when the storm hits.

‘Prevention over intervention’ perfectly encapsulates why sailing sunglasses are essential equipment for a sailor. Navigating a vessel safely means being constantly prepared to meet risks and challenges. This requires maintaining our vision in optimum condition and being ready to rise to the challenge of walls of sea-spray, congested waters, harsh reflected glare and a barrage of UV radiation.

Prolonged exposure to UV radiation without adequate eye protection can lead to cumulative damage to the eye in the form of macular degeneration, cataracts and damage to the cornea. Compromised vision can also lead to collisions.

That’s why your water sport sunglasses must be fit for purpose — designed to meet the unique demands of the marine environment. The best sunglasses for sailing are those that maximize eye protection and minimize potential hazards, helping you stay sharp, safe, and in command — no matter what the ocean throws at you.

⛵️Selecting the Best Sunglasses for Sailing
Six Essential Considerations ⛵️

Don’t buy into the wrong lens material

An unsuitable choice of lens material could lead to a serious eye injury if a sudden and unexpected impact occurred. Mineral glass lenses might be nice to look through, but they could shatter on impact with a boom or anything else on board. Polycarbonate, nylon or polyurethane lenses are the only lens materials that offer solid impact resistance.

Frame shape is more important than you may think

With anything less than a wrap fit, the gap between your face and edge of the sunglasses frame is an invitation for trouble. Your peripheral vision will be disrupted by the frame, with all the navigational risks that entails. Direct and reflected light penetrating the sides is also not filtered, exposing your eyes to glare and the sun’s harmful UV rays all day long. And then there’s wind and spray which will always find its way in leading to red-eye and eye fatigue.

Lens distortion is your No.1 enemy

Optically incorrect lenses can convince you that you are further away from an object than you really are, and that is a dangerous place to be. ‘Object shifting’ caused by poor lens construction can bring you closer to a collision than you might have bargained for. It is crucial that wrap-fit sunglasses lenses are decentred to ensure crisp, distortion free vision throughout the field of view.

Hydrophobic performance

Lens coatings make or break a quality pair of sailing sunglasses.  The ability to quickly shed sea-spray from the lenses and maintain a clear focus on your course cannot be understated. Specialised sailing glasses should have hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings on both inner and outer lens surface to maximise the water shedding performance.

Lens tint should be suitable for your sailing environment

Choose a lens tint that matches your weather expectations, or better still opt for a tint that adjusts to changing lighting conditions. Choosing the right visible light transmission rate (VLT) can make all the difference to your sailing eyewear.  Photochromic lenses are ideal for changing weather and lighting conditions, especially if you have prescription sailing sunglasses and you need to pop down to the chart table from time to time

Retention system

Last but by no means least is to ensure that you have a reliable retention system that tethers you to your sailing sunglasses. There will undoubtedly be moments when either a slip, fall or a wave hitting broadside will try to eject your untethered sunglasses into the abyss. Save your sunglasses and your pocket by ensuring this never happens by using a tried and tested retention system.

We’re keen sailors here at LiP. We set our design team the task of building the most resilient, versatile and reliable sunglasses for sailing. The end result is our 3watershades’ designs – each of which meet the essential criteria listed above – and much more. If you want to stay in the sailing game long into your twilight years, set your sights higher and invest in our performance sailing glasses.

Chroma Brown (FLO)

Polarized
2112-levante-chroma-brown

Our Chroma Brown lenses offer enhanced colours, and are a category 3 polarized lens. As the base lens colour has a red/brown hue, this lifts or ‘pops’ all colours (but especially reds and greens). This in turn increases contrast and reduces eye fatigue. The VLT for this lens is 14.8%. There is a noticeable difference in the performance of these lenses in cloudy / darker conditions. Owing to the increased contrast, it is easier to see details when the light levels drop. This is not to say that the brown lenses do not function well in bright light. They perform admirably in both bright and cloudy conditions. Brown lenses are versatile all round lenses for all types of conditions. As with the Chroma Smoke lenses, they offer 100% UV protection and are equipped with an advanced hydrophobic coating to repel water, an anti-smudge oleophobic coating and a hard coating on both sides of the lenses.

If you like a natural representation of colours, then this is the lens for you. The VLT (visible light transmission) is 10.2%. At these VLT levels, the lenses will be able to handle very bright sunlight and significant glare. However, for cloudy days and sessions when the sun is well on its way down, they may be a little on the dark side when it comes to the end of the day. Equipped with an advanced hydrophobic coating to repel water, an anti-smudge oleophobic coating and a hard coating on both sides of the lenses.

These polycarbonate VIVIDE Series lenses by LiP Sunglasses have a blended copper-grey base colour and a uniform silver mirror coating. The copper-grey base colour enhances reds and greens, while the uniform flash mirror coating cuts out some of the glare. With a VLT rate of 10%, these lenses are at the darker end of Category 3 lenses and are ideal for very bright cloudless skies. However, as these lenses are not polarised, reflected glare is not significantly filtered out so these lenses may not be ideal if you are looking for lenses that remove glare. Available only in the Typhoon model, this nylon lens is suited to bright and very bright conditions. As the visible light transmission (11.8%) is 2% higher than the transmission rate for the Pacific Blue lenses – the Super Blue lens performs a little better in lower light conditions. These lenses subdue the amount of blue light entering the eye and enhance reds and greens. The mirror coating also reflects some blue light. A good stylistic alternative to the Pacific Blue lenses if you prefer a lighter blue mirror coating and a little more brightness in the field of view. The VIVIDE Ice Blue polycarbonate lenses by LiP Sunglasses offer yet more enhanced contrast and colour perception than the Chroma brown lenses. Our VIVIDE lens technology controls light transmission into the eye by filtering out blue light and enhancing red and green light, boosting contrast. The VLT for the Ice Blue lenses is 10.7% which is on the lower end of a category 3 lens. It is a lens suited to bright sunny conditions. However, as with our Chroma Brown lenses, there is good performance in cloudier conditions owing to the increased contrast afforded by the rose lens base colour. I've been using the LiP Typhoon sunglasses for kitesurfing and other sports activities and they’ve honestly been a game changer. The clarity from the ZEISS lenses is amazing — no distortion, even in bright glare or choppy water. They stay on securely with the leash, even after wipeouts, and they’re super comfortable to wear for long sessions. I also really appreciate the anti-fog vents and how well they shed water. Not cheap, but totally worth it if you're on the water a lot. Easily the best watersports sunglasses I’ve owned.

Open Ocean Paddleboarding

I am a big fan of my Typhoon sunglasses. I love the comfortable/secure fit and top-notch lenses when paddleboarding out on the open ocean. I do find that the lenses will still fog up on really humid days, but less so than other performance sunglasses… and I will use an anti-fog wipe before going out on these humid days and that nicely does the trick. Lastly, Lip customer service is fantastic (thank you Graham and team).

Surfing

There are definitely good things about the Typhoon "anti-fog" non-polarized smoke sunglasses with silver mirror. They are comfortable, block out a lot of the sun and glare, stay on with wipeouts and seem very durable. The reasons I'm only giving two stars are that they either fog up a lot and/or the water on the outside of the lens doesn't evaporate so it becomes really difficult to see/read the incoming waves. I'm not sure if I'll keep using them since they interfere with my surfing a lot.

Great glasses for OC1 paddling! Prescription is perfect. Customer support has been fantastic, shout out to Graham.🙏

Wingfoil, SUP foiler

Good quality glasses, I bought new lenses for my old ones too. The photo chromes are a little light for bright days on the water here , but perfect for overcast. The gold rose polarized lenses are more appropriate for sailing around reefs and turtles anytime the sun is shining. The arms have yet to break or nosepiece go adrift like Jokeleys or the discontinued Maui Jimmys.
The rubber leash and retainer system work well in moderate surf.
The lenses did scratch after three years hard use, being thrown in a bucket and tossed in the car without the case, Keep sunsceen away from the lenses and use the micro fiber cloth only , they will serve you well. A quality product designed for ocean use.

Kayaking

Bought these for my dad who ocean kayaks as a Christmas present. He loves them and didn't take them off the rest of the day! He can't wait to test them out on the water once it gets warmer.

Surfings Best

This is the 2nd time I purchased LIP sunglasses after initially having the Surge, which worked really well surfing but wanted to get a slightly larger frame to give better peripheral vision, which the Typhoon does extremely well. This would be the ideal pair for this sport.Cheers Terry

These glasses are great. Well made, lightweight and they look and feel good to wear. My eyes do not squint at all in the bright light - they feel relaxed and do not get sore.
