When it comes to protecting your eyes, choosing a frame shape suited to your activities is as important as getting your sunglasses lenses right.
Today, most sunglasses manufacturers worth their salt ensure that their lenses block out 100% of UVA & UVB radiation, although there are still many cheap sunglasses around that do not even do this job right. But this is only half the story. Light can still enter the eyes from the sides, top and bottom of the lenses. The curvature of the frame in which the lenses are sited plays a further critical role. Put simply, the greater the curvature of the frame, the more unlikely it is that stray UVA and UVB rays will find their way into your eyes.
Why is this important?
We only have one pair of eyes, and they are easily harmed. Damaging UVA rays can pass through the cornea to the lens and retina. And the risk of damage to our eyes from UV radiation is cumulative, meaning the danger or damage is compounded over time.
Here at LiP, we take our customer’s eye health very seriously, and make no compromises in pursuing the highest quality functional eyewear. Our watershades have an 8-base (wrap-around) curvature which closely follows the contours of the face, providing excellent peripheral vision and minimal gaps for stray UV (or water) to penetrate into the eyes. Soft TPU rubber attached to the frames narrows any remaining gaps, so when you are out on the water for hours at a time, you can rest assured that your eyes are protected from the harmful UVA rays which cause cancer and the UVB rays which can lead to Pterygium (Surfer’s Eye).
It is worth remembering that UVA rays (which represent 95% of UV radiation in the atmosphere) are present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours throughout the year. Wearing sunglasses should not be just a summertime habit. UVA can penetrate cloud, glass and most fabrics, and significantly, it reflects off shiny surfaces like water. Having gaps at the sides and bottom of your sunglasses leaves your eyes open to UV penetration all year round – not just summertime!
